Overview
Aligning culture change with behavioural skills interventions is essential for ensuring that new behaviours are not only learned but also sustained within an organisation. Culture represents the shared values, norms, and expectations that shape how people behave at work. A simple way of explaining it is that culture is ‘the way we behave around here’. It is also ‘the behaviour we tolerate’, i.e. unaligned behaviour needs to be confronted and challenged or it becomes the culture. When a need has been identified to modify the culture, perhaps to align with a current or new, desired culture, interventions focus on equipping individuals with the new specific behaviours are needed. Culture change therefore requires three things:
- Communication of desired culture
- Training to specifically identify and practice the desired behaviours to embed the changes. As firm leaders are role models and responsible for culture, the training needs to start with them. They also need to be equipped to manage behaviour which does not align with the required behaviours.
- Reinforcement of the behavioural changes by ensuring that all systems, eg the performance management system, align with the changes and reinforce them.
Steps:
- Ensure that reinforcement mechanisms are in place and that systems are aligned.
- Identify the gap between the current and desired culture
- Specify and communicate which behaviours are required to change or be enhanced
- Train the behaviours
